1.1. Bottom view of an automatic transmission and related components: 1 - pipeline of the transmission cooling system, 2 - gearbox housing
Due to the complexity of the device and the hydraulic control system, as well as due to the need to use special equipment and the need for experience in overhauling an automatic transmission, overhauls should not be carried out on their own. Therefore, this chapter is limited to describing the procedures for general diagnostics, routine maintenance, adjustment, removal and installation of an automatic transmission.
If the automatic transmission requires a significant amount of repair work, it should be taken to a car or transmission repair shop.
You can, however, remove and install the gearbox yourself, which will reduce repair costs, even if it is carried out in a workshop.
Replacement and adjustment can be carried out at home, including the operations of connecting the throttle cable and connecting the lever.
Attention! Do not tow a disabled automatic transmission vehicle at speeds greater than 35 mph or more than 50 miles with its front wheels in contact with the road.
Note. On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, make sure that the audio system lock is disabled before performing any operation that requires disconnecting the battery.
