When overhauling an engine, the owner has several options to choose from. The decision to replace the cylinder block, pistons with connecting rods and the crankshaft is made taking into account several factors, the most important of which is the condition of the cylinder block. Other factors are price, access to auto repair shop equipment, availability of spare parts, time required to repair, and experience with similar jobs.
Recovery options include:
Replacement of individual parts. If the inspection shows that the cylinder block and a significant portion of the engine parts are suitable for further use, it may be most economical to purchase separate engine parts. In this case, the cylinder block, crankshaft and pistons with connecting rods must be carefully examined. Even with little wear on the block, the inner surfaces of the cylinders must be honed.
"short block". "short block" consists of a cylinder block with a crankshaft and pistons already installed with connecting rods. All new bearings are installed and all required clearances are maintained. The old camshaft, valves with their parts, cylinder heads and external parts are installed on the block. Possible (but not required) minor processing of old parts in a car repair shop.
"long block". "long block" comprises "short block" and, in addition, oil pump, cylinder heads, rocker covers, camshaft with valves and their parts, timing gear sprockets, chains and timing chain covers. All parts are installed with new bearings, seals and gaskets. All that needs to be done is to install the manifolds and external parts.
Consider which overhaul options are best for you and discuss your situation with local auto repair shops, auto parts suppliers and experienced mechanics before ordering and purchasing replacement parts.
