Attention! Inspection and repair of exhaust system elements should be carried out only after sufficient time has passed after driving a car for complete cooling of the system parts. Also, when working under a vehicle, make sure it is securely supported on stands.
1. The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold, a catalyst, a muffler, an exhaust pipe and connecting pipes, brackets, brackets and clamps. The exhaust system is attached to the body with fixing brackets and rubber brackets (see illustration). If any part of the exhaust system is connected incorrectly, excessive vibration and noise will be transmitted to the body.
14.1. To detach this rubber bracket, unscrew the bolts (indicated by arrows)
2. Conduct regular inspections of the exhaust system to keep it in working order. Watch for any damaged or bent parts of the system, open seams, holes, loose connections; timely find traces of corrosion and other defects that can lead to the ingress of exhaust gases into the car interior. Damaged parts of the system should not be repaired; they must be replaced with new ones.
3. If the exhaust system components are severely corroded or rusted together, then welding equipment will probably be required to remove them. The most convenient way to carry out repairs is to remove the muffler at a service station using a gas cutter. You can simply saw off the old parts with a hacksaw for metal. Be sure to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from metal filings, and use gloves to protect your hands.
4. There are some rules that must be observed when repairing the exhaust system:
- A) Carry out work on removing parts of the exhaust system from the rear of the car to the front.
- b) To facilitate the removal of system parts, apply a penetrating agent to the connections (see illustration).
- V) Use new gaskets, brackets and clamps when installing exhaust system components.
- G) Use an anti-jamming agent on all threaded connections when assembling the exhaust system.
- d) Make sure there is sufficient clearance between the parts you install and any points on the bottom to prevent overheating of the floor covering and possible damage to the inner mat and insulation. Pay special attention to the location of the catalyst and heat shield (see illustration).
