Ignition coil
Engine with a displacement of 3.8 liters:
- Primary winding resistance - 0.3-0.6 Ohm
- Secondary winding resistance - 5,000-6,500 ohms
Note. On vehicles equipped with a Delco Loc II audio system, be sure to disable the audio system's interlock device before performing any work that requires disconnecting the wires from the battery.
Ignition systems
The 3.1L engines covered in this manual are equipped with a high power ignition system (HEI), and 3.8 liter engines - with a direct (without distributor) ignition (DIS).
Battery Charging Circuit
The charging circuit includes a generator with a built-in voltage regulator and a battery. Their joint work ensures the supply of electrical energy to the ignition system, lighting fixtures and all additional devices.
Three types of alternators are used on the vehicles covered in this manual. Early car models are equipped with a CS 130 type alternator (current 100 A), and later - with a CS 130 generator (current 105 A) with rear mounted air conditioning, and CS 144 (current 140 A, engine 3.8 l). All types of generators have a conventional pulley with a fan.
Engine start system
The electric circuit of the starting system consists of a battery, a starter, an ignition switch and other electrical equipment associated with them. The starter has an enabling relay mounted directly on the housing.
