2. Check the exhaust pipes and their connections for leaks, corrosion and damage. Make sure all brackets and holders are in good condition and tight (see illustration).

3. Check the bottom of the body for holes, corrosion, open seams, etc., which may allow exhaust gases to escape into the atmosphere. Seal all body openings with silicone or body putty.
4. Causes of crackling and other noises during engine operation can also often be found in the exhaust system, especially on the mounts and suspension. Try to move the pipes, muffler and catalyst. If these parts are in contact with the body or suspension parts, secure the exhaust system with new fasteners.
5. Check the current condition of the engine by inspecting the inside of the exhaust pipe. Exhaust deposits here are indicators of engine adjustment. If the pipe is black and covered in soot or covered with white deposits, the engine needs to be tuned, including a thorough fuel system check and adjustment.
