2. The brushes can develop a film that affects their performance, so the brushes should be washed regularly in a cleaning solution.
3. Operation of the brush mechanism can loosen bolts, nuts and fasteners, so they should be checked and tightened if necessary at the same time the brush rubbers are checked.
4. If the gum brushes (sometimes called inserts) are cracked, worn or matted, they should be replaced with new ones.
Windshield wiper
5. Remove the brush from the wiper arm (see illustration), using a small screwdriver to pry up the latch.

6. When the brush is removed, you can get the gum out of it.
7. Grasp the end of the wiper blade with one hand, the rubber band with the other. Pull one end of the rubber band out of the brush to pull it out, and then take out the whole elastic band (see illustration).

Rear wiper
8. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot and remove the brush from the wiper arm axle (see illustration).

9. Using pliers, squeeze the clips on the end of the brush together, then move the rubber band and remove it from the brush.
For all models
10. Compare the new elastic with the old one in terms of length, design, etc.
11. Reverse all disassembly operations and insert a new brush into place. This will automatically lock it in the correct position.
12. Reinstall the brush on the lever to its original position, dampen the windshield or rear window and check the correct operation of the brush.
