Transfer box oil

On cars, depending on the configuration and year of manufacture, the following transfer boxes are installed:

Models up to 2007 release:

• Borg Warner (BW) model 4481NR3 (single stage), providing a torque distribution between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40:60 (constantly).
• Borg Warner (BW) model 4482NR4 (two-stage), providing a torque distribution between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40:60 (constantly).
• New Venture Gear model NVG 236/246 RPO NP8 (transfer box with automatic torque distribution system).

Models from 2007 release:

• Borg Warner (BW) model 4485NR3 (single stage), providing a torque distribution between the front and rear axles in a ratio of 40:60 (constantly).
• New Venture Gear model NVG 246 RPO NP8 (transfer box with automatic torque distribution system).

Checking the oil level

Note: It is not necessary to regularly check the oil level in the transfer case. The check is carried out according to the periodicity schedule.

1. Park the vehicle on a level, level surface.

2. Clean the area around the drain and fill plugs.

3. Remove the fill plug (IN). Make sure the oil level in the transfer case is under the cut of the filler plug.



4. Check for visible oil contamination. If the oil is contaminated, it must be drained and filled with new. Make sure the oil has the correct viscosity.


5. Install and tighten the fill plug. Plug tightening torque 20 Nm.

Change of oil

1. Remove the drain plug (A) and drain the oil. Remove the gasket.







2. Install a new gasket and tighten the plug. Tightening torque 20 Nm.

3. Remove the fill plug (IN).


4. Remove the gasket.

5. Fill with fresh oil.

Transfer case oil type:

• BW4481 NR3/4482 NR4 GM specification - DEXRON® III, 12346143 (or equivalent 10952622)
• BW4485NR3 GM specification - 88861800 (USA), 88861801 (Canada)
• NVG 236/246 NP8 GM specification - Auto-II, 12378508 (or equivalent 10953626)

Filling volume:

• BW4481 NR3 - 1.5 L
• BW4482 NR4 - 1.4 L
• BW4485NR3 - 1.4 L
• NVG 236/246 NP8 - 1.9 l

6. Check the oil level and top up if necessary.

Note: Do not overfill above the set level.

7. Screw on the filler plug. Tightening torque 20 Nm.
