The cars in question are equipped with either four- or five-speed manual transmissions, or 3- or 4-speed automatic transmissions.
Most manual transmissions are 4 or 5 speed (type RPO MG5 or RPO MCO respectively), designed for normal operation. The crankcases of these gearboxes are cast from aluminum alloy. On some cars, a 4-speed (RPO M20) or 5 speed gearbox (RPO MT8, MW3) with cast iron crankcase.
