1. The pilot bearing supports the gearbox input shaft and is pressed into a hole in the crankshaft rear flange. The condition of the bearing should be checked each time the clutch is removed. If there is any doubt about the condition of the bearing, it should be replaced. When removing the engine or gearbox, the bearing must be changed without fail.
2. Remove the gearbox.
3. Remove the clutch.
4. Check the condition of the bearing by lighting it in the bore.
5. If damage is found, press the bearing (see photo).
6. In the absence of a puller, remove the bearing using a water hammer. To do this, fill the recess in the crankshaft with grease, carefully removing air, and hit the mandrel inserted into the bearing. The diameter of the mandrel should be slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the bearing (see photo). Remove the bearing and remove all grease.
7. Press the new bearing in with grease. The bearing seal must face outwards (see photo).
8. Install the clutch and gearbox.
