Models 1987-1995 use a conventional distributor ignition system, models from 1996 with an SFI injection system use an advanced ignition system. As part of a conventional ignition system (before 1995) includes an ignition distributor, a coil with a sensor and an electronic module. The advanced ignition distributor contains only the camshaft position sensor and runner. Ignition control is provided by the crankshaft position sensor and the processor unit. The ignition timing is automatically controlled by the processor unit.
The processor processes signals from various sensors and calculates the optimal ignition timing. All systems also use signals from the knock sensor. The ignition coil is installed separately on all models.
In the advanced ignition system, the electronic module is installed next to the coil.
