Removing the front wheel drive (see Removing the front wheel drive).
We clean the hinge from the outside and clamp the shaft in a vise with soft metal jaw pads.
Operations for replacing the cover of the outer hinge of the left wheel drive are similar to the operations for replacing the cover of the outer hinge of the right wheel drive.
We bite the large collar of the cover with side cutters..
or, by inserting the blade of a screwdriver into the lock of the clamp, we unclench it..
... disconnect and remove the clamp.
Remove the small clamp in the same way.
We remove the cover from the outer hinge and slide along the shaft.
With a rag, remove the grease from the end of the hinge cage in the area of \u200b\u200bthe "antennae" of the retaining ring.
We insert forceps between the antennae.
Knocking the hinge off the shaft is more convenient with an assistant.
Unclenching the retaining ring, through a soft metal drift, we strike with a hammer on the end of the hinge cage..
... and knock the outer hinge off the shaft.
The punch must not transmit impacts to the separator or balls in order to avoid damage to them.
For clarity, the removed retaining ring is shown.
Remove the dirt cover from the shaft.
If the hinge is removed only to replace the boot, when it is known that it has recently been damaged and the CV joint has retained its performance, then, without disassembling the hinge, we remove the maximum possible amount of lubricant from it and wash it in kerosene.
We wipe the hinge with a rag and blow it with compressed air.
We inspect the balls, the separator, the clip and the internal cavity of the body.
Seizures, dents, cracks, traces of corrosion are not allowed - we replace such a hinge.
We clean the shaft of old grease and apply a thin layer of new grease to it.
We put a hinge cover on the shaft and put new grease into the cavities of the hinge body and cover, in total 120–140 g.
We put the hinge on the shaft, ensuring the fixation of the retaining ring in the groove of the shaft.
We check the mobility of the hinge - it should move without jamming.
We pull the cover onto the hinge body so that the belts of the cover for the clamps are located in the corresponding seats of the shaft and the hinge body.
Using a thin-blade screwdriver, we remove the edge of the cover from the hinge body to equalize the air pressure inside and outside the cover.
We fix the hinge cover with new clamps.
Universal band clamps for fastening the CV joint boot: 1 - clamp for fastening the boot on the hinge body; 2 — a collar of fastening of a cover on a drive shaft
Special pliers are required to install the original clamps supplied as spare parts.
In their absence, you can use the universal tape clamps for fastening the CV joint covers, which are commercially available.
We show the installation of a universal band clamp that secures the cover to the hinge housing.
Installing the clamp in the groove of the cover..
... with pliers we pull out the tape, squeezing the clamp.
At the same time, with other pliers, it is necessary to rest against the lock of the clamp or the latch tabs, holding the clamp from turning.
Tighten the clamp..
... bend the elongated end of the tape in the opposite direction.
Holding the tape in a taut position, we check the tightening of the clamp, trying to move the clamp by its lock along the groove of the cover.
If the clamp moves, it is not tightened enough and the clamp must be tightened again.
Tighten the clamp..
... we bend the tabs of the latch onto the tape.
In the same way, we fix the cover with a clamp on the drive shaft.
We check the reliability of fastening the hinge cover with clamps.
With angular movements of the hinge body relative to the shaft, the cover should not move from the body and move along the drive shaft, as well as rotate on them.
Extra end of clamp band (behind the tabs of the tape retainer) bite off side cutters.
We carry out further assembly of the drive in the reverse order.
