The junction of the exhaust manifold with the mating plane of the cylinder head is sealed with a metal gasket. In the event that the gasket is burned out or the manifold fastening nuts are loosened, exhaust gases can escape through this connection to the outside, which is accompanied by a characteristic sound. If the defect cannot be eliminated by tightening the exhaust manifold fastening nuts, the gasket must be replaced.
To avoid burns, it is recommended to start work after the exhaust system has cooled down.
Disconnect the block of wires of the control oxygen concentration sensor from the block of the wiring harness of the engine management system (see Removing the control oxygen concentration sensor).
We unscrew the nuts of the studs securing the flanges of the catalytic converter and the exhaust manifold (see Removing the catalytic converter).
We take out the dipstick and insert a paper plug into its tube.
Wet the nuts securing the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head with a penetrating liquid.
Using the "12" head, unscrew the ten nuts securing the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head.
If the nuts are stuck to the studs, they can loosen with the studs. This is normal.
We shift the exhaust manifold along the remaining studs of the cylinder head and remove it up.
Remove the metal gasket of the exhaust manifold.
We unscrew the nuts remaining on the studs.
On the threaded part of the stud screwed into the cylinder head, apply a thin layer of thread sealant.
Before wrapping the stud into the head of the block, we screw two nuts onto its threaded part and tighten them together. In this form, we wrap the stud until it stops and, having unlocked the nuts, unscrew them.
Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order.
Before installing the exhaust manifold, we clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and exhaust manifold from carbon deposits and install a new gasket.
Before tightening the new exhaust manifold mounting nuts, we apply graphite grease to the cylinder head studs.
Tighten the exhaust manifold mounting nuts to the specified torque.
