The condition of the cover must be monitored, because if it is leaky, dirt gets into the ball joint of the rod and into the cavity of the mechanism, which can cause rapid wear of parts.
We turn the steering wheel all the way to the side opposite to the location of the replaced cover.
We show the replacement of the left cover of the steering mechanism, we change the right cover in the same way.
Before disconnecting the tie rod and the tie rod end, mark their relative position with a marker.
Loosen the tie rod end locknut (see Tie Rod End Replacement) …
... with the "13" key, we turn the rod out of the hole in the tip (counting the number of turns of thrust), holding the tip from turning with the "19" key.
We turn off the locknut from the thrust..
... and remove the clamp securing the cover to the rod.
Inserting the blade of a screwdriver into the lock of the clamp securing the cover to the steering gear housing, unclench the lock or bite the clamp with side cutters.
We remove the damaged cover from the steering rod.
Before installing a new boot, check the condition of the tie rod ball joint. If the hinge is badly worn (play in the hinge) or sticks - the rod must be replaced with a new one.
We install the cover in the reverse order and fix it with a new clamp to the body.
We screw the rod into the hole of the tip, guided by the previously applied marks or by the number of turns of the rod, determined when it was turned out of the tip. Tighten the tie rod end locknut.
After replacing the steering gear cover, it is necessary to check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment on a special stand - at a service station.
