Note: Operation is shown using the exhaust camshaft oil seal as an example.
You will need: all the tools needed to remove the timing gear (see «Replacing the timing belt and its tension roller»), rear cover of the gas distribution mechanism drive (see «Removal and installation of the oil pump»), cylinder head cover (see «Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket»), as well as a screwdriver, a hammer.
1. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.
2. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (ohm «Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke»).
3. Remove the cylinder head cover (see «Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket»).
Note: Removing the cylinder head cover is necessary to keep the camshafts from turning when removing their pulleys.
4. Remove the timing belt and camshaft pulleys (see «Replacing the timing belt and its tension roller»).
5. Using a screwdriver, remove the oil seal from the camshaft front bearing housing.
6. Before installing a new oil seal, inspect its working edge. It should be smooth, without tears, dents and rubber influxes. The gland spring must be intact and unstretched. Lubricate the working edge with engine oil.
Helpful Hint: To make it easier to press in the stuffing box, make a small chamfer on its seating edge using a needle file or a fine emery wheel.
7. Install the oil seal with the working lip inside the bearing seat, carefully fill the working lip onto the camshaft (e.g. with a wooden stick) and press it in to the stop using a suitable mandrel. You can use an old oil seal as a mandrel.
8. Establish all removed details and knots in an order, the return to removal.
