Between the flanges of the cylinder head and the exhaust manifold there is a sealing gasket made of two thin molded metal strips connected by spot welding. If this gasket is leaking, the exhaust gases break out, accompanied by a characteristic sharp sound (collector «flogs»). If the problem cannot be corrected by tightening the exhaust manifold mounting, replace the gasket.
Replacing the exhaust manifold gasket is described in detail in the subsection «Exhaust manifold replacement».
