Note: The Chevrolet Cruze uses an auto-tensioning parking brake cable system. If necessary, the tension of the parking brake cables can be loosened and restored, for example, for servicing disc brakes or the parking brake system.
1. Raise and fully release the parking brake lever several times.
2. Make sure the parking brake lever is fully released.
3. Turn on the ignition. Make sure the brake system malfunction lamp is off.
4. If the brake system warning light is on, check that the parking brake lever is fully depressed at the stop and there is no slack in the parking brake cables,
5. Place the car on a jack or raise it on a lift.
6. With the parking brake fully released, check the parking brake levers on the rear calipers. The levers should be on stops in the caliper housings. If the levers are not on the stops, jamming is possible.
7. Fully raise and lower the parking brake lever 3-5 times so that the cable tensioner takes up the slack in the parking brake cables.
8. Raise the parking brake lever all the way.
9. Try to rotate the rear wheels the wheels should be braked.
10. Fully release the parking brake lever.
11. Make sure the parking brake is set by turning the wheels. The wheels should rotate freely, without braking.
12. Lower the vehicle from the lift or jack.
