Removal procedure
Attention! To prevent personal injury, do not remove the expansion tank cap on a hot engine and radiator as the heat pressurizes the system. Hot liquid and steam can escape under high pressure.
1. Drain the coolant. follow the paragraph «Draining and recharging the cooling system» in this section.
2. Loosen the lower radiator hose clamp on the water pipe.
3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pipe.
4. Remove the water tube bolts from the cylinder head and thermostat housing.
5. Remove the water tube.
6. Remove the heater inlet and outlet hoses from the heater inlet and outlet tube.
7. Remove the heater inlet and outlet pipes from the thermostat housing.
8. Remove the mounting bolts holding the thermostat housing to the cylinder block.
9. Remove the thermostat housing from the cylinder block.
10. Remove and discard the thermostat housing gasket to the cylinder block.
11. Remove thermostat (1) from the thermostat housing (2) in the following order:
- A. Secure the thermostat housing in a soft-jawed vise.
- b. Press the holding rod (3) on both sides of the thermostat and rotate the thermostat until it passes the locking tabs (4) on the thermostat housing (2).
- c. Release the thermostat spring pressure.
- d. Remove the thermostat assembly from the thermostat housing.
Installation procedure
1. Install the heater inlet and outlet pipes to the thermostat housing.
Tighten
Tighten the heater inlet and outlet tube bolts to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
2. Install the thermostat into the thermostat housing.
3. Make sure that the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and thermostat housing are clean and dry.
4. Install a new gasket to the thermostat housing.
5. Install the thermostat housing to the cylinder block.
Tighten
Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
6. Install the water pipe.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt securing the water tube to the thermostat housing to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
Tighten the water tube-to-cylinder head bolt to 33 Nm (24 lb-ft).
7. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
8. Connect the heater inlet and outlet hoses to the heater inlet and outlet tube.
9. Attach the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing with a hose clamp.
10. Refill the engine cooling system. follow the paragraph «Draining and recharging the cooling system» in this section.
