Starting the engine with the ignition key
Turn the key to the ACC position, turn the steering wheel slightly to disengage the steering wheel lock.
Manual transmission: depress the clutch.
Automatic transmission: move the selector to position P or N.
Do not press the accelerator pedal.
Diesel engine: To preheat, turn the key to ON, wait until the W indicator goes off.
Turn the key to the START position while depressing the clutch and brake pedals; release the pedals after starting the engine.
Before restarting or to shut off the engine, return the key to the LOCK position.
Caution: Do not run the starter continuously for more than 10 seconds. If the engine does not start, wait 10 seconds before trying again. This will prevent damage to the starter.
Starting the engine with the ignition control knob
Manual transmission: depress the clutch. Turn the ignition control knob to the START position while depressing the clutch and brake pedals; release it after starting the engine.
Automatic transmission: move the shift lever to position P (parking) or N (neutral). The engine will not start in any other position. To restart the engine on an already moving vehicle, only the N position should be set (neutral). If the vehicle is equipped with a keyless entry system, the brake pedal must be depressed to start the engine.
Diesel engine: Turn the ignition control knob to the ON position to turn on the preheat until the W indicator goes off.
Turn the ignition control knob to the START position.
When the engine starts to crank, release the ignition control knob and it will return to the ON position.
If the ignition control knob does not turn, try pushing the knob in and turning it again.
If the remote control is not in the vehicle, or if something is interfering with the operation of the remote control, the driver information display (DIC) the message ELECTRONIC KEY NOT DETECTED will be displayed in the middle of the instrument cluster (ELECTRONIC KEY NOT DETECTED).
