Airbag modules should be activated in the following situations:
- If the car is destined for recycling. See «Deployment of airbag module (inside the car)» in this section.
- If the airbag module has been damaged in transit, storage or service.
Attention! To avoid injury if the airbags or seat belt pretensioners deploy from outside the vehicle, take the following precautions:
- Deploy airbags by removing people from the work area. Personnel who need to be present when the airbags are deployed must be at least 10 meters away (33 feet) in front of the car.
- Do not connect the voltage source until all other pre-deployment airbag procedures have been completed.
- Allow the deployed air bag or seat belt pretensioner module to cool for 30 minutes before handling it.
- Use gloves and goggles during disposal.
- If the airbag does not deploy, disconnect the power supply and wait 5 minutes before approaching the vehicle.
1. Locate the airbag module, front side up, on a flat area outdoors, at least 10 meters away (33 feet) from any obstacles and people.
2. Use two additional wires at least 10 meters long (33 feet) each to connect the airbag module/seatbelt pretensioner to the battery to be used for deployment.
3. Strip 13mm (0.5 inch) ends of these additional wires.
4. Connect these two wires together at one end with a twist.
5. Place the twisted ends of these wires near the battery that will be used to deploy the airbag. Do not connect wires to the battery at this stage.
6. Free ends of the specified wires 10 m long (33 feet) splice with the free ends of the wires from the airbag/pretensioner, one end to each wire from the airbag module.
7. Wrap the wire connections with electrical tape.
8. Now the free ends of the wires are 10 meters long (33 feet) spliced to the wires from the air bag module/pretensioner, and the twisted ends of these wires are near the battery that will be used to deploy. Remove people from the work area.
9. Unwind the ends of the wires located next to the battery that will be used for triggering.
10. Touch one wire to the positive battery terminal and the other wire to the negative battery terminal. The airbag will deploy.
11. Dispose of deployed airbags and seat belt pretensioners using proper precautions. See «How to Dispose of a Deployed Airbag Module» in this section.
