Attention! During maintenance, handle the sensing and diagnostics module (SDM) very careful. Do not hit or shake the SDM. Never connect power to the airbag system (SIR), if the SDM is not hardwired to the vehicle. To make the airbag system (SIR) is working correctly, all SDM sensor and diagnostic module mounting bolts must be properly tightened, and the arrow on the SDM must point towards the front of the vehicle. If the SDM is not securely attached to the vehicle, the enabled module may deploy, causing the airbags to deploy unexpectedly and may result in injury.
Important: If a large amount of water has entered the interior of the vehicle, such as from leaks, driving through deep water, flooding, or other causes, the sensing and diagnostic module may need to be replaced (SDM) and SDM connector. With the ignition off, inspect the area around the SDM, including the mat. If there is significant soaking or signs of soaking in the past, remove the water, repair water damage, and replace the SDM and SDM connector. Before any of these repairs, the airbag system must be disabled (SIR). See «Deactivating the airbag system» in this section.
Removal procedure
1. Disable the airbag system (SIR). See «Deactivating the airbag system» in this section.
2. Remove the front floor console. See Section 9G, Interior lining.
3. Remove the connector position retainer tied to the sensing and diagnostic module connector (SDM).
4. Disconnect the sensing and diagnostic module electrical connector (SDM).
5. Unscrew the SDM module mounting bolts.
6. Remove the SDM.
Installation procedure
1. Install the sensing and diagnostics module (SDM) so that the arrow on the SDM points towards the front of the vehicle.
2. Secure the SDM with screws.
Tighten
Tighten the SDM mounting bolts to 10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
3. Connect the electrical connector of the sensor and diagnostic module (SDM).
4. Secure the connector with the retainer.
5. Install the front floor console cover. See Section 9G, Interior lining.
6. Turn on the airbag system (SIR). See «Activating the airbag system» in this section.
7. When replacing an SDM with a new one, perform the BCM reprogramming procedure to have the BCM relearn the new SDM's ID code.
