The D16 manual transmission is a fully synchronized five-speed manual gearbox with constant mesh gears and a pair of helical final gears used in front-wheel drive transmissions.
A feature of the D16 gearbox is the use of triple locking rings in the synchronizer mechanism for 1st and 2nd gears. The remaining synchronizers are equipped with ordinary single blocking rings.
The reverse gear is engaged by means of a sliding intermediate gear, which, when engaged, engages with the gears of the drive and driven shafts. The reverse driven gear is the ring gear on the 1st and 2nd gear clutch.
