Checking tightness of joints and seals
Check the engine compartment for loose components, cracked or kinked vacuum hoses, faulty plugs, connectors, and any other missing or disconnected components listed below.
Checking the correct routing of hoses and electrical wiring
Check that the following hoses and electrical wiring are routed correctly so that they are far enough away from moving or hot parts.
View the following items:
- fuel hoses fuel lines;
- air conditioning hose;
- vacuum hoses;
- high voltage wire for the ignition system;
- low voltage wiring.
Checking the movement or ease of movement of linkage mechanisms, valves and other components
Accelerator cable
Check the free play of the accelerator cable when the engine is hot, as described below.
1. Pull the accelerator cable towards the throttle lever.
2. Pull the cable away from the throttle lever until the lever starts to move (free play).
Clutch pedal
Checking the free play of the clutch pedal when the pedal is depressed.
Steering system
To check the condition of the steering system, it is recommended that two mechanics and the vehicle be parked on a level surface.
One of the mechanics turns the steering wheel in one direction, then in the other and checks its operation, fastening and condition, as well as the fastening of the steering column (with or without amplifier), while another mechanic checks for free play in the following places:
- tie rods (backlash is not allowed),
- mounting the steering mechanism on the traverse,
- steering shaft universal joint with upward movement from the steering gear (backlash is not allowed),
- fastening and tightness of all clamps.
Starter
1. Make sure that the start switch and contacts are connected securely.
2. Start the starter and check the following:
- the starter must keep the engine running in normal mode,
- the starter should work without extraneous noise.
Engine start
Start the engine and check for proper operation.
If the engine does not start or stalls after starting, check the following. For more information see the maintenance manual:
- ignition system;
- serviceability of air control in idle mode;
- sensors and engine control unit (if necessary).
Check for extraneous noise in the engine compartment.
Start the engine and check for abnormal noises. If there is abnormal noise, tighten or secure the parts and adjust the distance between the components.
Checking the tightness of hoses, pipe connections, seals, gaskets and plugs
Visually inspect hoses, pipe connections, seals, gaskets and plugs for leaks and signs of leakage (streaks humidification etc..) in the following order:
- fuel system;
- air conditioning system;
- cooling system;
- brake system;
- clutch drive;
- steering system with hydraulic booster.
Mechanical part of the engine:
- camshaft support housing;
- cylinder head;
- cylinder block;
- oil pan camshaft seals.
